The Rule of 4! (A bathroom trick for toddlers)
When it comes to your toddlers using the bathroom it can be a messy situation. I have three toddlers that use the restroom and it can get a little crazy having them do the necessary deeds after they use the toilet. Try the rule of 4!
What happens with toddlers and the bathroom
My toddlers are amazing! They are true cuties, but they also do toddler things like
- Not flush the toilet
- Not wash their hands
- Pee on the seat
- Not close the door
In general it can be tricky to teach your toddler to be clean in the bathroom. So I came up with the rule of 4 bathroom trick.
The rule of 4 bathroom trick.
This is where I ask my little ones if they have done 4 things before they were finished with the bathroom.
Once they leave I ask them to count off the 4 things they did while using the restroom.
1- Flush the toilet?
2- Close the lid?
3-Wash your hands?
4- Turn the light off?
This is where I began to notice if my little one could accomplish these four things I knew the bathroom and their little hands would be cleaner.
Now that my oldest is four years old I want to up the “rule of 4” to the “rule of 7” adding on things because he is older and has gotten the first rules down and perfected.
The Rule of 7 bathroom trick
5-Check the seat for pee?
6- Check the floor for items that shouldn’t be in there?
7- Shut the door?
If I have him count on his hands and I give him a good HURRAY! for each finger/rule he accomplished, I find that it becomes fun for him and he like to do it each time. Giving me a love for a cleaner happier kid and a happier mom.
You know what is awesome! now that my little guy does this the ones younger than him fallow in his footsteps quite easily. So I guess it is like teaching 4 kids all at once when I teach my oldest.
The rules of #s with other rooms
If you find this helpful you can use it with other rooms as well. Using ideas like…
- pick up 5 toys?
- make your bed?
- put your Pajamas away’
- hang up your coat? etc.
